First Kiss Leaves a Scar
Mouth going
No words flowing
Flowers growing
He was on the other side all along
But now he's in a dead forest
Blood bargained
Those arteries harden
And a demon chorus
Sings that same old song
Wings broken
Doubt spoken
Memories choking
That time when they got along
Got claustrophobic in open land
An escape route on the palm of her hand
Made a fist and he doesn't know where to stand
And now he's on his own
Setting up for the stomach pump
Leaning on the hollow tree stump
Becomes just a collection of been dumped's
And life goes on
Picks up an old fling
Ties her up with a thin string
Of lies about what's gone wrong
Makes a list of what's been right
Scratches out her name then writes it twice
Tips over till the roots bend
The way her hands try to blend
And then on her knees to send
A new version of the same old song
A new passion
But no fire
Just an old flame
And he's just too tired
To keep a smile on
So the world stops
With his weight loss
And the sign that says
"Keep off"
Distance separating all that he's lost
But it's just that same old song
Pulls the red out of white
Kisses her out of spite
Doesn't think twice
About right and wrong
Tries not to touch the open sore
Notches on the bedpost just to keep score
Knocking at his own door
As he disappears into the dawn
And now out of sight
He feels that lightning strike
The same place twice
That place he used to call home
Puts a memory on trial
Cuts the glass with a smile
Painted in blood on the tiles
The photographs still keep him warm
Old fire with a new fling
On the beach to see what the tide brings
But nothing like this just comes along
So he had a ceremony where he declared he lost
And like the garbage he's tossed
With everyone saying, "It's your fault"
And he's only so strong
And now he's fading
The thought parading
It's about the little things
And he relates from behind walls
Surviving through vitriol
Subsisting on the bitter taste of it all
Doesn't grow another
So his feelings stutter
Through the filter of whatever
He has done wrong
And this maze in its malevolence
Keeps him always trapped
With his lost innocence
And a chance to be genuine
He knows now he doesn't belong
And she'll always be his princess
She'll always be his entrance
To a game of losing with eloquence
And the words he carried in his pocket were wrong
