They All Stared

There's a hole in the harbor
That sucks the empty ships out to sea
And from that spot beneath the corduroy sky
I can see where to buy the salt
I sneak back to a brown hole in the ground
Where I keep the snakes and the bugs
Haunting me over exile islands
I hear scratching from the other side
And I carve into the wall with my betrayed fingers
"This is the end
This is the end of you and me
This is the end of the sugar rush smiles
And headless layabouts"
I haven't figured out where to put my arms
Now that they're not around you
I break the glass of the storefront
Because it does not open when I try to enter
I've mistaken something for a door
I've cracked something so beautiful I could see right through it
The view is darker now that cracks have begun to bleed through
I return to my hole in the ground
My secret common sense rebellion
Where I issue urgent dispatches
Sneaking behind my own back
To pour salt in my wounds
I turn my coat against myself
And it breaks like glass in your mouth
It tastes like blood in my heart
You are what's missing from my veins
We shoot from such a distance and still hit our marks
We drive in snow and blizzards
Just going in circles until we approach
We give each other guarantees
Blank looks of pigeon rats
Spelling "lost" in romantic hand
I see the chalk outline of us
I see the shadows tracing back to you
And my voice has gone to hell
My fingers trample on our nerves
Every word I don't want to write
Is about me being further from you
